In defence of the humble pouch

The library has several pouches, in differing sizes, but they must be the least hired slings we have. Yet to me the simple pouch is a thing of beauty; a seriously underrated sling.

A pouch is a single loop, usually with a curved seam, of fabric which when folded in on itself creates a pocket or seat for baby to sit on. They are the simplest style of sling there is, but there is a knack to getting baby or toddler fitted correctly. Suitable from birth to pre-schooler they are an extremely adaptable sing and baby can be worn tummy to tummy or in a hip carry position (sometimes used in cradle, back carry and budda carry but I prefer not to use these holds). The problem- they are sized. One size does not fit all. Most pouches are sized (a small selection of adjustable pouches exist) and this means you need to fit the pouch to the wearer. And I mean the wearer not the baby. To find the correct size pouch sling you measure from the shoulder to the hip bone and that is the size pouch you want – no matter what size your baby. Most people assume if you have a bigger baby you will need a bigger pouch. This is not the case and will leave the pouch not fitting correctly. An incorrectly fitting pouch will be uncomfortable for both wearer and baby. Although there is less room for adjustment pouches can be tweaked by flipping shoulder to tighten rail.

The plus point of a pouch is its size. They fold up very small. Once you have learnt how to use one they are extremely quick to use – excellent as a car sling for quick school run trips etc. Some pouches come with built in leg padding, while others don’t. The principle to using one remains the same.

I love my pouch (Size 2 Hotsling). I wish more people appreciated the beauty of this simple, underrated sling. And look, ours even comes with sleepy dust attached.
